GENERAL DATA PROTECTION REGULATIONS (GDPR)
General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR (EU) 2016/679 is a regulation in EU law on data protection and privacy for all individuals within the European Union and the European Economic Area. It also addresses the export of personal data outside of the EU and EEA.
The law replaces the Data Protection Directive of 1995, which has until now set the minimum standards for processing data in the EU.
GDPR will significantly strengthen rights for:
- Individuals who will be able to exercise more control over how companies hold and use their personal data;
- Regulators who will be able to use much greater enforcement actions against companies who are deemed to have contravened the new regulations.
